In Salzburg, the director of an animal aid organization that is active throughout Austria is said to have put the club’s donations, sponsorship and money in his own pockets since 2016. As police reported today, the damage is of at least 300,000 euros.
According to a spokeswoman for the state police department, the damage is likely to increase and could ultimately be in the mid-six-digit range. The executive did not reveal which organization it was.
Suspicious of everyone from Salzburg
The defendants are the 65-year-old president of the approximately 6,000-member association and four other board members between the ages of 35 and 73. The suspects are all from Salzburg. They are said to have spent the money, contrary to the association’s bylaws and approved purpose, on various vehicles, the restoration of an antique car, motor boats, vacations, other private purchases and for general living expenses.
Research on animal aid organization
After a member noticed inconsistencies in the financial management of the association in September 2019, he filed a complaint with the police. In their interrogations, however, the defendants do not confess and refuse to make statements. Now he is reported to the Salzburg prosecutor’s office for breach of trust and falsification. As the police spokeswoman said, it is possible that the number of suspects will increase.
