Schramböck on the second block: “I don’t have a crystal ball”

But what if the 50 billion is exhausted?

The speed with which funds are collected and claimed has decreased. For example in the field of guarantees.

So maybe the 50 billion is not needed?

That depends on the winter months. Special measures will be needed there. If 50 billion is not enough, you will have to shoot more.

It is fully dependent on digitization to create new jobs. Should an unemployed flight attendant become a programmer now?

We have to help all the people who are now unemployed as a result of the crisis. We have allocated 700 million for recycling. And yes: you simply increase your chances in the job market if you are trained in the field of digitization.

Now we come to the dispute between the government and the EU over the fixed cost subsidy. Initially, the EU had direct government subsidies limited to € 800,000 per company. After the protests from the Finance Minister, there are now two million.

That shows movement in the right direction. We want five million. We will continue to apply pressure.

Shouldn’t the state temporarily invest in structurally healthy companies before they go bankrupt due to the crisis?

We have tried various measures, such as guarantees, to strengthen the capital stock of companies. Such mechanisms are more useful than direct state participation.

It is often criticized that aid packages are now also helping companies that are truly insolvent.

I do not understand this review at all. The Austrian economy and SMEs were doing very well before the crisis. On average, there were 5,200 bankruptcies per year in Austria over the last ten years. That is a very small proportion in relation to the hundreds of thousands of companies.

How long will the crisis last?

There is no serious answer to this. What I can see, however, is the intense research efforts around the world to rapidly develop drugs and vaccines. That makes me feel positive.
