The “Destination Country Austria” project will run until the end of 2022 and is intended to provide evidence-based principles for specific control in the field of migration and asylum.
Interior Minister Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) has started the project “Austria, country of destination”. The aim is to scientifically investigate when and why migrants choose Austria as their destination country. The project will run until December 31, 2022 and is intended to provide evidence-based principles for specific control in the area of migration and asylum for Austria.
According to Nehammer, the project was commissioned because there is hardly any research or investigation into the targeted state decisions in Austria and how they are produced. The minister believes that it is necessary “to jointly develop effective strategies for the future based on scientific studies,” as he explained in a broadcast after an opening ceremony.
“What role do social media play, for example?”
In order to better understand migration as a whole, the “Destination Austria” project aims to examine the underlying factors and mechanisms, in particular with regard to Austria. Core research questions on the factors of secondary migration must be answered. “Who makes the decision about migration or the country of destination?”, “What factors are relevant to stay in the site or in the region?” or “What role do social media, state support services, education, employment, communication channels or even smugglers play?” The answer to these questions should provide information that should be the basis for the development of precise, target group-oriented measures to create sustainable prospects on the site.
The “Destination Country Austria” project is the first such research project for Austria. “The focus of the investigation is on the countries of origin Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria and Nigeria, although the group of countries can certainly be expanded,” said Interior Ministry Secretary General Helmut Tomac.
The research design is characterized by a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods, with a focus on surveying the relevant target groups. All phases of migration should be mapped, for example those prior to migration, during transit or along the route and upon arrival in Europe or the destination country.
