For mountain rescuers it was déjà vu: a 70-year-old climber from the Vöcklabruck district lost his balance on Tuesday afternoon while descending the Traunstein via the Naturfreundesteig, crossing under the well-known aluminum ladder, and fell about 70 meters. A 34-year-old man from Amstetten had a fatal accident at the exact same location on August 27.
The hikers who followed him had watched the retiree fall and alerted the mountain rescue. 15 rescuers from Gmundner Mountain moved in, but could do nothing for the mountaineer. The body was recovered by the police helicopter crew “Libelle OÖ”. The two witnesses to the accident were treated by a member of the RK Vöcklabruck crisis intervention team.
It is the third fatal accident on the local mountain of Gmunden this year. Since the searches began, 141 people have lost their lives in the Traunstein.
