Guest registration in Vienna: no data requested yet

The city of Vienna offers a free digital system in which even owners should not have access to customer data.

For more than a week, Vienna restaurants have asked their guests to provide their details. “We are not required to register to insure someone,” Mayor Michael Ludwig said at a news conference Tuesday. On the other hand, the measure is intended to facilitate faster contact tracking in cases of coronavirus infection. This has yet to become surprising: Since mandatory registration went into effect, no host has been infected with an infection, said the head of the Vienna Chamber of Commerce, Walter Ruck. So it was not yet necessary for the authority to request or inspect documents in a local.

The City of Vienna and the Vienna Chamber of Commerce have developed a digital guest registration system for the catering industry that will be available to hosts free of charge in the future. The digital variant works via a smartphone and a QR code, as is already the case in many places. Existing systems can still be used, as can paper forms.

The host does not have access to the data

The registry, which has now been developed on behalf of the Chamber of Commerce, aims to cut down on “red tape,” as Chamber Speaker Ruck explained. The data could only be viewed by the authorities, not even the owner has access to it, as stated.

Customers can also save their data directly to an application on their own smartphone. If you visit a restaurant or coffee shop, you just have to scan the code. All information is deleted after four weeks. The test operation of the gastro-digital registration system will begin in the second half of October. Full operation is scheduled to begin in November.

85 percent of food vouchers redeemed

Mayor Ludwig also recalled the gastronomic voucher that was issued to support Viennese restaurants. Therefore, 781,000 copies have been exchanged, that is, 84.5% of the coupons issued. According to the City Council, more than 30 million euros have been implemented. The chips were particularly popular at the Schweizerhaus, Grünspan, Strandcafe or the “XXL Leopoldauer Alm Restaurant”, it was revealed today.
