Now he is getting serious in Leopoldstadt: that has happened since the last elections in 2015 and that will be important in the future.

LEOPOLDSTADT. Vienna will vote on Sunday, October 11. It’s time to look back on the last district council election. For the people of Leopoldstadt, the elections of five years ago were probably the most exciting of all time. Because a few months after the actual election, the repetition led to an unexpected result.

But let’s start again: in the 2015 district council elections, 38.64 percent of the votes went to the SPÖ, 22.15 percent for the Greens, and 22.10 percent for the FPÖ. While the Reds were clearly first, second and third place were very close. However, there were irregularities in the count: the number of voting cards was different from the number of votes cast.

Unexpected power shift

After the FPÖ challenge, the election was repeated in 2016 with an unexpected result: with a plus of 14.56 percent and, therefore, 35.34 percent, the Greens placed first. Behind the SPÖ with 28.06 percent and the FPÖ with 22.47 percent. Percent. For the SPÖ this meant the loss of the district president and nine of his 26 terms in the district parliament. However: only 35 percent of Leopoldstadt residents cast their vote, in the 2015 elections that were repealed it was 64.7 percent.

In the end, the 60 mandates were redistributed: the Greens now hold the most mandates at 22, followed by the SPÖ at 17 and the FPÖ at 14. The ÖVP and Neos each received three terms, and Andas has one term.

Who will be the district president?

But what about the next election? It is difficult to compare it with the previous one, since the electoral participation in 2016 was low. The quality of life in the district is good, but there is still room for improvement. One problem is the reduction of traffic on Praterstrasse. Are the plans of the Greens or the emerging bike lane with the voters? District leader Uschi Lichtenegger (Greens) is sure that this time she will also be able to conquer the Leopoldstadt team.

Greener, more space for cyclists and pedestrians and calming traffic is what not only the incumbent district director wants, but also her opponent, the main candidate of the SPÖ, Alexander Nikolai. As well as calming traffic and considering the wishes of local residents, this relies on expanding public transportation and local parking, as well as affordable housing.

More safety thanks to the greening of the facade

Not only will it be exciting between the Greens and the SPÖ, the parties with weaker votes also have some plans. FPÖ’s Wolfgang Seidl calls for more facility for cars and not a long-distance bus terminal. On the contrary, Sabine Schwarz from ÖVP trusts family and safety.

From Tempo 30 throughout the area to the green facade, Christian Moritz von Neos calls for citizens to have more voice. Josef Iraschko now works with links for a just society.

One thing is certain: every vote cast counts. On Election Day, everyone in Leopoldstadt can have a say in the future of the district.
