With “Fratelli tutti” Pope Francis restores humanity’s conscience. With these words, the great Sunni imam of the Al-Azhar University in Cairo, according to the portal “Vatican News”, honored the new social encyclical of Francis. In a tweet, Ahmad al-Tayyeb recalled the dialogue document between the Vatican and the Muslims of Abu Dhabi, which the Pope and himself had signed in February 2019.
In it, the religious representatives commit to join efforts for dialogue, peace, solidarity with the weakest and the preservation of creation. The Pope was inspired by this joint statement for his encyclical “Fratelli tutti”, he mentions Al-Tayyeb several times in his text.
“The message of my brother Pope Francis ‘Fratelli tutti’ is an extension of the document on human brotherhood,” wrote the Grand Imam, referring to the Abu Dhabi document after the publication of the encyclical. “It reveals a global reality whose positions and decisions are unstable. It is the vulnerable and marginalized people who pay the price.”
With his letter on brotherhood and social friendship, Pope Francis expressly addresses all “people of good will and a living conscience,” Al-Tayyeb said. It is bringing consciousness back to humanity.
The Secretary General of the High Committee for Human Fraternity, responsible for the implementation of the Abu Dhabi Dialogue Document, also participated in the official presentation of the encyclical on Sunday at the Vatican. It is Judge Mohamed Mahmoud Abdel Salam. According to Vatican News, the Sharia scholar declared himself “in complete agreement with the Pope. I share every word he writes in the encyclical on the subject of brotherhood.”
