Schramböck: PK on the economic situation in Austria
Economy Minister Margarete Schramböck (ÖVP) reports on the economic situation in Austria during the crown pandemic.
Schramböck: “Not very pleasant situation”
The increasing number of infections is an “unpleasant situation”, said the minister. There are “early warning signs” that they are also having an impact on the Austrian economy. “The economic recovery has lost momentum again, as can be seen in the weekly GDP indicator,” warns Schramböck. After all, there is a slightly positive evolution in the labor market. 290,700 people perform short-time jobs. That is 5,800 less than last week. Around 500,000 Austrians are currently unemployed.
Schramböck on travel advisories
“Every travel warning has negative consequences, every travel warning puts jobs at risk.” Every new infection is a potential threat to the job market. Therefore, every effort should be made to remove travel warnings from Germany and the Netherlands. Travel advisories would reduce consumption in Austria and destroy jobs. “We are in a critical phase because the number of infections is increasing accordingly.”
Carinthia: School closed by infected teacher
The Feistritz an der Drau secondary school in the Carinthian district of Villach-Land has been closed for ten days due to a Corona case on the teaching staff. As the state press service reports, the infected teacher is said to have taught in five classes. Students in the affected classes and all teachers at the school are now under quarantine and are being tested for corona virus infection. The lessons at the school had to be switched to distance education because there are no longer teachers available at the school.
EU: von der Leyen in quarantine
As a precaution, the president of the EU Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, will be in quarantine until Tuesday. The president of the Commission attended a meeting last Tuesday. Among the participants was a person who has now tested positive for the corona virus.
Lower Austria: 97 new infections
The number of confirmed coronavirus infections in Lower Austria rose by 97 to 7,382 on Monday. With 6,070 recovered, there were 89 more than Sunday, according to state medical personnel. A total of 116 deaths are to be lamented in relation to Covid-19 in the state.
Corona app: 200 reports of infected people
The Red Cross’s “Stop Corona App” aims to help slow the spread of the corona virus. So far around 200 people have tested positive through the app and warned others. Federal rescue commander Gerry Foitik told Radio Vienna about the app: “200 people with a confirmed infection have done so since June. And just over 1,200 with a suspected infection.” Although only 200 people have registered on the app out of around 49,000 people who have tested positive in Austria so far, Foitik is satisfied: “Each case contributes to the fact that the pandemic slows down accordingly, especially in its own area of action “.
In short: “work” becomes a central theme
Federal Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP) wants to make the issue of “work” the central political issue for the next six months, along with the fight against the pandemic. A sustained economic and labor crisis must be avoided “by all means,” the head of government told the APA. “We are fighting a three-way battle: the fight for every COVID patient, the fight for every company, and the fight for every job,” Kurz said.
Anschober: “The values are still clearly too high”
From Saturday to Sunday, 714 new infections were recorded in Austria. “Unlike Saturday, the numbers are stabilizing again today, as they have been since September 20. However, these values are still too high, we have to go down with the numbers. We are working on that with all our might.” Anschober said via Broadcast. More than 1,000 new infections were recorded from Friday to Saturday.
Vaccine: “Within the next few weeks or months”
Austrian virologist Florian Krammer remains optimistic about the early availability of a corona virus vaccine. There will probably be decisive results “in the next few weeks or months”, then vaccination can be done. That’s what the virologist working in New York said Sunday night at ORF- “Downtown.”
Paris: “high alert”
Due to the tense situation in Corona, the “maximum alert level” will be declared in and around Paris on Monday. French news agency AFP reported late Sunday that the new security measures could, among other things, trigger the closure of cafes. On the other hand, restaurants could stay open with greater corona precautionary measures, he said.

In the Czech Republic, another national emergency took effect at midnight on Monday night. The government had decided to declare a state of emergency due to a “spectacular increase” in crown numbers.
