The first schools rely on the mandatory mask in class – politics

In two schools in Vienna, students are required to wear masks during class. Currently, this regulation is not a problem in Austria.

Basically, students and teachers currently have to wear masks outside of the classroom throughout the school building. Two schools in Vienna go one step further. They also instruct their students to wear mouth and nose protection during the lesson.

At the Lycée, due to the high number of infections, it was decided to test the tightening for 13 school days from today. A decision will be made on October 21 on whether to uphold the measure. Parents were asked by letter to give their children at least two masks a day. The nurses will explain to the children “how to use the masks”. Many parents are dissatisfied with the fact that the mask requirement also applies to elementary school students.

Both schools are special cases

At Zwi Peres Chajes School (ZPC), students aged six and over are required to wear masks in class from the beginning of the school year. The school wants to continually evaluate this precautionary measure and adjust it if necessary. Both schools are special cases, emphasizes the Ministry of Education. The Lycée is directly regulated by the French Ministry of Education, while the ZPC School is subordinate to the Israelitische Kultusgemeinde Wien.

But also in federal and state schools the educational authority (but not the principal, keep in mind) can prescribe the mask in class for a maximum of ten days. However, only as long as there is no corresponding regulation by the health authority. The Ministry of Education and the Vienna Directorate of Education are quite skeptical about the requirement to wear a mask in class. The ministry maintains that education only accounts for three percent of all groups.

Uniform crown rules in the next 3 weeks

Within the next three weeks there should be uniform regulation across Austria on how schools must deal with suspected corona cases and contact persons. Education Minister Faßmann announced this yesterday on the ORF “Hohes Haus” program. Such uniform rules “are not a mystery.” This week he wants to speak with the Minister of Health, Anschober, about this. There are also plans to extend the rapid tests that are currently only carried out in Vienna schools to other federal states by mobile teams. Specifically, there is interest in Tyrol, Lower Austria and Styria. Here the minister did not want to commit to a schedule.
