Austrian 49er sailors Benjamin Bildstein and David Hussl managed to catch up at the European home championships at the Attersee and won the silver medal. The Yacht Club Bregenz duo had to admit defeat only to the Germans Tim Fischer / Fabian Graf after twelve races in the Olympic class of high speed boats.
Despite Voroter Hussl’s illness-related absence at first, even gold was still within his grasp on the last day. “It also looked good until the gennaker of the Irishman in front of us suddenly fell into the water,” Hussl wrote. “We couldn’t evade any more and we capsized. That cost us the decisive meters, but we are still very happy with the silver. “
The medal was ultimately a three-man achievement. Because on the first day, Steuermann Bildstein played with coach Ivan Bulaja. “This week was incredible,” said Bildstein after difficult conditions. “We missed days of training due to illness and then Ivan had to intervene.”
Bildstein / Hussl take silver in the European Sailing Championship
The European Sailing Championship in Attersee ended successfully on Sunday from a national perspective. Benjamin Bildstein and David Hussl sailed for a silver medal in the 49ers.
Only three points left in the gold
However, after Hussl’s recovery, Vorarlberg’s team of the year gradually made its way. Thanks to positions seven, three, five and ten, the duo managed to get on the podium from fifth place on the final day. In the end, the gold was missing three points. Fourth place at the World Cup has long secured his Olympic ticket.
At 49erFX, tax collector Laura Schöfegger and temporary partner Elsa Lovrek were only able to report positively after eleventh place overall. “We are very satisfied with the result, we could never have dreamed of it,” explained Schöfegger. In the Nacra 17 competition, Thomas Zajac and Barbara Matz fell behind in 19th place. Two places earlier were Laura Farese and Matthäus Zöchling from Burgenland.
