The 20-year-old Syrian living in Lower Austria succeeded with his trick, but was investigated shortly after thanks to video surveillance recordings. A little later, the cell phone was returned to its rightful owner.

The 30-year-old from Linz had previously left his mobile phone on a table in the mall. When he noticed the cell phone missing a bit later, it was gone. His 34-year-old girlfriend called his number, but the phone was off. As it turned out, the Syrian had simply taken the forgotten device and inserted the SIM card into his own mobile phone in the parking lot. He then called the 34-year-old’s cell phone number via SMS (missed call) and pretended to be “Police Pasching.”

He asked the woman to pick up the police cell phone. However, you still need the unlock code. Since Linz’s wife firmly believed that she should call the police, she gave him the code. This gave the 20-year-old a fully functional cell phone. However, he and a colleague (16) were filmed by the video surveillance system at the mall during the robbery. Security detained them both at the mall and handed them over to the police.

After initially denying this, the Syrian drove the officers to his car in the parking lot. The stolen phone was stored there. Furthermore, it turns out that the 20-year-old does not have a driver’s license. This was removed in 2017.
