A 72-year-old woman from the Amstetten district had walked through the Mendling Valley in Göstling an der Ybbs (Scheibbs district) that afternoon with her three granddaughters aged four and seven. According to police, a gust of wind similar to a hurricane may have uprooted a fir tree. The tree fell down the path and hit the group. A four-year-old girl was fatally wounded.

When the accident occurred around 1:45 pm, the family was heading downstream at an altitude of about 620 meters. The tree, uprooted by the wind, fell down the path and fell towards the group. Branches met the 72-year-old woman and two of the four and seven-year-old granddaughters. A four-year-old girl from the Amstetten district came to lie down under the tree.

No cell phone reception, difficult access for emergency services.

The grandmother immediately ran to the aid of the boy and was able to free him. Two hikers gave first aid. According to state police headquarters, a 25-year-old aide had to run up the valley to get mobile reception so he could start the rescue chain.

Firefighters had to clear access via a forest road due to the numerous fallen trees. Despite the most intensive rescue and resuscitation measures from the ER doctor, the four-year-old boy died on the spot.

The girl’s grandmother was cared for by the AKUT team. She and her second four-year-old granddaughter had also suffered injuries and were transferred to Amstetten State Hospital.
