Storm Brigitte brings us continuous showers and thunderstorms – Austria News

Storm Brigitte causes a foehn storm, heavy rain, and unusually strong thunderstorms for the season. She only relaxes on Thursdays.

According to meteorological experts from the Austrian Center for Severe Meteorology, there were violent thunderstorms with around 17,000 lightning strikes on Saturday, especially in southern Styria and Burgenland. The low will set over the British Isles in the coming days and will bring changeable autumn weather in Austria until mid-week. “Especially from Tyrol through Salzburg to Upper Styria, strong gusts of up to 100 kilometers per hour caused trees to fall and damage individual roofs,” says Manfred Spatzierer, chief meteorologist at the Center for Severe Meteorology.

“In the mountains, a foehn reed roared with gusts of more than 200 kilometers per hour!” In addition, there were heavy rains and local floods, especially in Upper Carinthia, with around 100 liters per square meter. The Stubai and Gschnitztal valleys were also affected by heavy rains in Tyrol. In the evening, the cold front of the downside caused strong thunderstorms in southeastern Styria and Burgenland.

October day unusually rich in lightning

The perfect combination of warm Mediterranean air and strong winds again triggered violent thunderstorms on Saturday night in the country’s far east. “In southeastern Styria and Burgenland there were thunderstorms like in midsummer with heavy rains, storms and even greater local hail,” Spatzierer reports. The Ubimet lightning measurement system recorded a total of 17,272 lightning strikes, with an incredible 9,006 strikes in Burgenland alone. There were more lightning strikes only on three summer days in Burgenland, namely July 1 and August 17 and 29.

Today, Sunday, it will be foehn in the Northern Alps, but compared to Saturday, the foehn will be much weaker. However, there may still be storm gusts in the predestined places. On Monday night the foehn ends and especially in East Tyrol and Upper Carinthia it rains heavily and thunderstorms for a few hours. In the Gail Valley in particular around 50 liters per square meter is possible and therefore local flooding is possible.

Deep Brigitte is staying until Wednesday

At the beginning of the week, showers can be expected across the country, with short thunderstorms possible in the southeast and east. The wind turns from south to west and temperatures reach 11 to 20 degrees. On Tuesday, the sun will temporarily shine more often and it will be easy to blow dry. You can only expect a little rain from Vorarlberg to the Inn and Mühlviertel. Also, it will be relatively warm at 14-22 degrees by early October.

Wednesday is then inconsistent with numerous rains, in the southeast it also rains prolonged and productive. In addition, it cools everywhere and with a strong west wind the temperatures do not exceed 9 to 16 degrees. On Thursday there will probably be an intermediate high in the Alpine region, but it will probably remain unstable with new Atlantic lows.
