In Constance, opponents of the crown measures wanted to set an example. As a means, they had planned a huge human chain. Which, however, turned out to be shorter than expected.
Thousands of people demonstrated for and against Corona’s policy at Lake Constance. With the so-called chain of people for peace, among other things, the “lateral thinking” initiative mobilized some 11,000 people around the lake on Saturday, according to the responsible police headquarters in Constance, Ravensburg and Lindau. However, a continuous human chain through Austria, Germany, Liechtenstein and Switzerland, as planned, was unsuccessful.
As reported by “SWR aktuell”, the organizers expected up to a quarter of a million participants. In Constance alone, 15,000 were registered, the police counted about 2,200 there. Initially there were no numbers from the organizers. For this, aerial photos should be evaluated, said co-organizer Gerry Mayr, who is also organizing a demonstration of “lateral thinkers” on Sunday in Constance.
The goal of the human chain through four countries was to send a European signal against the crown measures and enter into a dialogue with the government, Mayr said. The Konstanz businessman believes that quarantine is a modern prison and the mask requirement is an injustice.
Police speak of a peaceful course
Counter-protesters from various groups marched in front of the Constanza part of the human chain with banners clearly recognizing the crown’s measures. There were occasional discussions between the individual camps. The police spoke of peaceful protests.
Among the protesters on the shores of Lake Constance was FDP politician Karoline Preisler, who was already a patient of the crown and had come from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. “Today is the day to defend democracy,” Preisler said, referring to the day of German unity. With a signal she made it clear that she herself had the virus. “I think it is correct and important that the measures of the crown are questioned,” he said. “But I want us to seize the democratic opportunities for this, and I am happy to provide information,” the politicians said.
There have been around 30 meetings and demonstrations in Konstanz throughout the weekend. According to the police, 30,000 people were registered during the two days. According to the police, there were significantly fewer people than expected on the first day.
