On Saturday, 99.61 percent of all sirens worked during the civil defense test alarm. Most of the failures occurred in Styria and Carinthia.
The annual nationwide civil defense test alarm took place on Saturday. Between 12 noon and 12:45 pm, the three civil defense signals “Warning”, “Alarm” and “All clear” were broadcast throughout Austria after the “Siren Test” signal. The test alarm serves on the one hand to check the technical equipment of the alert and alarm system, on the other hand to familiarize the population with these signals and their meaning.
This year a total of 8,221 sirens were tested for functionality, with 8,189, which corresponds to 99.61 percent, working perfectly. All the sirens worked in three federal states. in the Burgenland was 319 in Upperösterreich 1,430 and on Vorarlberg 226.
Most of the siren failures occurred in Steiermark to be recorded. 15 failures with 1,278 sirens means a 98.83 percent success rate. In Carinthia a total of eight of the 874 sirens did not work (99.08 percent). In Lower Austria Four failures were documented. But because the remaining 2,446 sirens worked perfectly, a 99.84 percent rate was achieved here. Tirol reaches a 99.69 percent success rate. Out of 963 sirens, only three did not sound. In Vienna Y Salzburg one bug was reported in each case. In Vienna 178 sirens sounded (99.44 percent), in Salzburg 501 sirens (99.80 percent).
Overall, failures in the nine federal states were 0.39 percent. 32 sirens did not work. In last year’s test there were “only” 24 mermaids.
Warning via app
This year a test has been reactivated via the new app-based population alert system “KATWARN Österreich / Austria”, which is available free of charge for smartphones, but also as an SMS and email service and , if necessary, together with the siren signals to warn the population. It can be used.
Austria has a well-developed alert and alarm system, which is operated by the Federal Ministry of the Interior together with the offices of the state governments. Austria is one of the few countries that has a full siren warning.
Currently, the signals can be transmitted by 8,221 fire sirens. Depending on the dangerous situation, the signals can be activated centrally from the Federal Alert Center in the Operations and Coordination Center (EKC) of the Ministry of the Interior, from the state alert centers of the individual federal states or the centers district alert.
