Dominic Thiem surprisingly faces Hugo Gaston in the round of 16 at the French Open.
The wild card contestant and the last remaining Frenchman in the competition beat Stan Wawrinka in a close game with 2: 6, 6: 3, 6: 3, 4: 6, 6: 0.
Wawrinka made a bespoke 6: 2 start, but the only 20-year-old Gaston quickly counterattacks and won set two 6: 3. After a break in the rain during the third set, the Frenchman followed suit and took it too. 6: 3.
The fourth set is again 6: 4 for Wawrinka, but the Swiss gives up all his service games in the decisive fifth set and finally has to admit defeat at 0: 6.
The round of 16 between Thiem, who clearly won his duel with Casper Ruud, and Gaston will be played on Sunday. Lichtenwörther have yet to play a match against the youngster, who is still completely unknown on the ATP circuit.
Gaston expects “crazy experience” against Thiem
In the first interview on the field, Hugo Gaston said that he was just trying to play his game. He got eight breaks against Stan Wawrinka. Against Dominic Thiem, expect “a crazy experience. Like today, I’ll give it my all and we’ll see what comes out. I have nothing to lose.”
Rafael Nadal does not show nudity against Stefano Travaglia. The twelve-time champion of Paris swept the Italian 6: 1, 6: 4, 6: 0 in just over an hour and a half. Nadal now faces Sebastian Korda, 20. The United States qualifier is the son of former world-class Czech player Petr Korda.
