Climate unrest blocks Operngasse, city in chaos of traffic jams

Climate activists blocked Vienna’s Operngasse for the whole night. The meeting does not dissolve.

Under the slogan “honeycomb”, climate activists have been occupying Vienna’s Operngasse since Thursday night. The organizers of “Extinction Rebellion” speak of 100 participants, the Viennese police, however, from 50 to 60. The “climate rebels” are calling for a so-called “Council of Citizens”. This should consist of randomly selected citizens who are advised by experts and can thus determine their own destiny.

This is represented by the “honeycomb” symbol, which is shown with large structures in the demonstration: some “rebels” have chained themselves. Activists believe that this represents a communication flow without hierarchical structures, representing the cooperation of civil society and its informed decision.

Blockers ask for breakfast

The squatters asked on Facebook: “So come on, bring hot tea or breakfast to support the rebels who are still in chains.” The blockade is likely to cause a traffic fiasco, of which the protesters are also aware: “Attention motorists * As we continue to block Operngasse and therefore access from Ring or Karlsplatz to Linke Wienzeile, we advise you to switch to public transport within Vienna today and in the future (also not affected by our blockades;)) “

According to police spokesman Markus Dittrich, the situation at the scene is currently calm and is constantly being reassessed by officers. At the moment it is not necessary to dissolve the meeting. A dissolution would only be called into question if traffic was paralyzed in such a way as to restrict freedom of movement and the situation became unreasonable for the public. But that is not the case currently.
