Austria celebrates the centenary of its federal constitutional law on Thursday. Parliament holds a ceremony at the Austrian National Library. The Federal Constitutional Law was approved by the National Constituent Assembly on October 1, 1920 after the collapse of the Habsburg monarchy. Austria thus established itself as a democratic parliamentary republic with a federal organizational form. The “architect” of the federal constitution was Hans Kelsen, one of the most important lawyers of the 20th century. Recreated after the Nazi era, the B-VG still forms the basis of the nation state.
The Constitutional Court was established at the same time as the constitution. This postponed his grand ceremony due to the corona pandemic. But on the occasion of the anniversary, VfGH President Christoph Grabenwarter called the constitution a “good framework to lead our community through crises.” The B-VG passed its biggest test in the government crisis that triggered the Ibiza video last year. At that time, Van der Bellen attested the constitution “elegance and beauty”.
