Berlin, Lesbos – Germany took in 139 refugees from Greek camps on Wednesday. The group that arrived in Hanover by plane included 51 unaccompanied minors who were affected by the fire in the Moria refugee camp in Lesbos, according to the German Interior Ministry. The remaining arrivals are 17 sick children with their nuclear families, a total of 88 people.
German Interior Minister Horst Seehofer (CSU) had already agreed some time ago to take in a total of 243 sick children with their nuclear families from Greece in Germany. The 17 children and families who arrived on Wednesday belong to this contingent.
Germany accepts up to 150 minors from Moria
In addition, the German government announced that it will participate in the reception of 400 unaccompanied minors who were transferred to the continent by the Greek government after the Lesbos fire. Germany will host up to 150 unaccompanied minors; this group includes the 51 unaccompanied minors who arrived on Wednesday.
The German government had also decided to host another 1,553 family members from the Greek islands, whose right to protection had already been determined by the Greek government. The Interior Ministry announced that it will soon begin its entry.
The refugees will be distributed to the federal states of Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, Berlin, Lower Saxony, Hesse, Hamburg, North Rhine-Westphalia and Schleswig-Holstein. The basis is a joint federal-state concept that was developed in coordination with all the states. Criteria such as family ties and special medical needs are also taken into account.
According to the ministry, a total of 713 refugees, including 104 unaccompanied minors and 142 sick children, have been flown from Greece to Germany this year. (APA / AFP)
