The National Councilor should extradite Norbert Hofer

The prosecutor requested the extradition of Norbert Hofer on charges of incitement to hatred and degradation of religious teachings. The National Council was asked to accept the official prosecution.

The reason is the statements of the third president of the National Council and head of the FPÖ in relation to the Koran. At a Freedom Party rally in June at Viktor-Adler-Markt in Favoritner, Hofer declared that the Muslim holy book was more dangerous than Corona.

Presentation of facts

Several representatives of the Muslim community announced then that they would denounce the former federal presidential candidate for hate speech. First, the Islamic Faith Community (IGGÖ), whose president Ümit Vural condemned Hofer’s “incomprehensible derailment”.

The “Muslimischer Österreicher Initiative” (IMÖ), the small party SÖZ and the Facebook platform “FPÖ Fails” also provided information to the prosecutor.

“Confidence in the rule of law”

IMÖ President Tarafa Baghajati appreciates the prosecutor’s request. This reinforces Muslims’ confidence in the rule of law and their feeling of belonging to Austria, she says. And the head of SÖZ, Hakan Gördü, is also confirmed: at the latest, Hofer must understand “that the agitation against Muslims is not a trivial offense”.

It has not yet been determined when the House Immunity Committee will decide on lifting Hofer’s parliamentary immunity. An appointment in plenary is expected in mid-October.
