56 percent of the construction area is allocated to apartments between 25 and 85 square meters. The remaining 44 percent is taken by the publicly available offer. “The present project is of immense importance for the city of Wiener Neustadt for several reasons. First of all, it shows how innovative urban development will take place in the future: we are compacting areas that have already been sealed in the city center, and thus we can preserve green spaces. Secondly, with the quarter we are creating a new living space in the city center and thereby ensuring more frequency, which in turn directly benefits commerce, ”says Mayor Klaus Schneeberger (ÖVP).
The aim of the new “Musisches Bildungszentrum” is to solve the space problem of the completely obsolete school location on Herzog Leopold-Straße. As for the height of the two planned residential towers, the last word has yet to be said. The proposal is now on the table. “The exact implementation will now be discussed,” says Schneeberger.
Citizen participation
In a public participation process, the public has time from October 5-16 to view the project on the Leiner site. Through the use of photovoltaic systems, geothermal probes and heat pumps, the roofs of buildings are used as storage for heat and cold and the facades and green roofs must take into account the reduction of CO2.
The “green building concept” is complemented by a car-free and climate-friendly zone. In addition to underground parking, electronic recharging stations, bicycle parking spaces, as well as car-sharing offers and a bus stop are planned in the area of the educational campus, explains the SÜBA AG Board of Directors, Heinz Fletzberger.
Student ideas are in demand
Barbara Meier, model and wife of Klemens Hallmann, invited children and schoolchildren from Wiener Neustadt to participate in the contest for ideas to name the city’s neighborhood. Great prizes await the winners.
Project plans will be presented to the public on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm and Wednesday from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the Leiner site from October 5 to 16. After a one-year dedication process and subsequent building permitting process, it is expected to be completed in 2025 after a three-year construction phase.
Criticisms of the opposition
The Wiener Neustädter Grünen speaks out against the “mega residential construction project in the middle of the city center, along with a shopping center, a cultural hall and a school,” said club president Selina Prünster. “It is true that the densification of the city center is completely in our interest, but we are very critical of the fact that the limits are being broken,” added Councilman Michael Diller.
“Stores and infrastructure will be removed from pedestrian zones,” the mandate said. Furthermore, “a sustainable transport solution is not being considered,” Prünster added.
The Wiener Neustädter ÖVP responded to this review: “Rather than obtaining information, grappling with details and seeking a conversation, the Wiener Neustädter Greens prefer to rely on their own half-knowledge and ignorance. The fact is that the most sustainable revitalization of the city center is the creation of livable spaces. That’s what all the recognized experts say.
