Formula 1 expert Marc Surer gave Lewis Hamilton a rating of 3 in Sochi Focus
(Motorsport-Total.com) – The (double) penalty against Lewis Hamilton sparked discussions the day after the Russian Grand Prix in Sochi. While Christian Nimmervoll (Facebook: “Formula 1 in with Christian Nimmervoll”) criticized it too harshly in his “Who Slept Worse Last Night” column, our expert Marc Surer suggests a completely different notch in the course of assigning ratings.
The former Formula 1 driver allowed Hamilton to get away with a rating of 3 overall. But he is amazed: “Why do you think you are the only driver who can start in a different place?”
Hamilton made the two exercise starts in question “at the end of the confusing, curvy pit exit” at an angle of nearly 45 degrees, Surer criticized. “At this point, someone who started correctly at the end of the pits is already 200 km / h. So it was also dangerous. So, in my opinion, the penalty was slight.”
Surer explains that his rating for the still overall leader in our 2020 Driver of the Year pick was also mild, with the fact that Hamilton was guided by his race engineer: “Bonnington really deserves a sixth grade.”
Hamilton was eighth in the Sochi daily standings with an overall rating of 3.0. This means that Surer, the editorial team and the more than 500 readers who voted shake hands.
It’s different with the winner of the day question. For readers that was Max Verstappen (average 1.8) ahead of Sergio Pérez (2.0). But because Surer gave both a 1 rating and the editorial team gave Perez a 1 rating and Verstappen a 2 rating, the Racing Point driver finally took the lead. He “only” finished the actual race on the track in fourth place.

Carlos Sainz (6): We really only got 6 in an extreme case. What the Spaniard did yesterday at Turn 2 was exactly something like this. Yes, the curve is generally crap and has no place on the Formula 1 calendar. But that’s no reason to hit the wall at full speed …

An evaluation Surer can accept. Perez lived up to his reputation as a “tire whisperer” and showed “good performance both in practice and in the race.” While he obtained grade 1 for Verstappen “especially for the qualifying lap”.
More surprises: Daniel Ricciardo lands in third place ahead of Grand Prize winner Valtteri Bottas and local hero Daniil Kwjat is rewarded with fifth place for his perfectly executed strategy. And Ferrari? Charles Leclerc (Surer: “All out”) finished seventh, Sebastian Vettel (“Qualifying crash, moderate race) 17th.
The 20th and last is Carlos Sainz for his blackout in the first round, by the way in the three pillars of our qualification, with maximum penalty from the editors. Surer wonders about the McLaren driver’s accident: “They all practiced the emergency exit during training …”
And even Alexander Albon, who with great difficulty managed to score a World Cup point, takes the fat off our certificate distribution: P19. “Once again in no man’s land” is all Surer can think of about Red Bull’s No. 2 performance.
the Idea behind our rating it is to evaluate the performance in a weekend and especially in the race with marks (1 = very good, 6 = unsatisfactory). External influences that the driver cannot control himself must be masked. And so that it is not only the editorial staff that subjectively values it, as is the case with football magazines, we have created a total of three equal pillars with readers and experts.

And this is how we calculate:
We determined the average from the average rating of Motorsport-Total.com users, the rating of expert Marc Surer and the rating of our editorial team. Our driver rating results from this average value. We only show one decimal place, but we use all decimal places for the calculation. These partially invisible decimals result in the ranking order of two drivers in the event of a suspected tie.
