Roads blocked, helpers in constant use: the cold and snow created chaos.

Snowy. Last week 27 degrees and that summer feeling. Now this: yesterday the first snow fell. In some valleys it even snowed up to 500 meters.

Out of the ordinary. At Bischofshofen (550 meters), two centimeters were measured. In the Ramsau / Dachstein region (1,207 meters above sea level) it was twelve centimeters and in Lech am Arlberg even 25: “That’s unusual for this time of year,” says Christian Ortner, meteorologist at the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics. from Salzburg (ZAMG). Such an early onset of winter occurs every five to seven years. The absolute snow points were above 1,500 meters.

Continuous use: the first snow brought chaos

Calls. The early start of winter brought serious traffic problems. Many roads such as the Timmelsjoch (B 186), the connection between Ötz and Passeiertal or the Silvretta-Straße (1,188 meters) had to be closed. Chains were mandatory on Saturday on some major connections from Vorarlberg through Tyrol to Salzburg and Carinthia. The Grossglockner Alpine Road was closed.

“Of course, a lot of drivers were unprepared, so they got stuck,” Ortner says. In total, the helpers had to go on 100 missions due to stuck cars or downed trees.

Melt. But the snowfall was short-lived. The sun, which is still strong, is already blinking and melting the white splendor. Only at higher altitudes does it stay a little longer.

Most of the snow was here

Pitztal. Most of the snow was measured in Hohe Tauern with 44 centimeters and in Tirol on the Pitztal Glacier with 49 centimeters. But also in the Feuerkogel in Upper Austria (1618 m, photo) 30 centimeters were recorded, in the Loser (1500 m) in Styria even 40 centimeters.

The golden autumn now follows the snow flurry

After a cold and warm week, a golden autumn could follow.

Vienna. The sun is still strong and is already melting the snow. A few hours of sunshine can be expected across the country. But the next few days are varied. Mondays and Tuesdays can still rain, but better midweek weather brings higher temperatures. A golden autumn should follow mid-October with plenty of sunshine and ideal weather for hiking.
