The American president is shaking the foundations of democracy when he is already casting doubts about the legitimacy of the elections. But he is not to be blamed for the subsequent Supreme Court nomination.
The essence of democracy is that free elections allow a peaceful change of power and that the defeated accept their defeat. Donald Trump apparently has a little problem with this reasoning and the idea of losing his job. That is why he is preparing and shooting wildly at the postal voting system in need of reform, which is playing a bigger role than ever in the crown pandemic. Trump has been casting doubt for months about whether the November 3 presidential election will be okay. The other day he did it again, yelling at his supporters in Virginia that he would win the election unless the American Democrats cheated. This can be a comforting strategy so that a narcissist does not face disappointment. Unfortunately, Trump is also undermining the foundations of American democracy.
If the elections are closed, they will have long aftermath of trials and recounts. A situation may arise where two candidates claim victory for weeks.
Joe Biden, the presidential candidate of the American Democrats, is consistently in the lead in all national polls. But it also didn’t help Hillary Clinton get nearly three million more votes than Trump. The majority in every state is what counts. Biden probably has 200 of the 538 voters in his pocket. He still has 70 to go, and there are many avenues open for him. However, Biden’s leadership in the decisive states of Ohio, Pennsylvania and Florida is shrinking. The 77-year-old will not come to the White House in a sleeping car.
