For the first time in his career, Jurij Rodionov is at the French Open in the main competition of a Grand Slam tournament.
“It’s something special,” the 21-year-old commented in LAOLA1’s conversation with Jürgen Melzer. “It was definitely not easy,” he said, recalling his qualifying matches.
The Nuremberg-born, Lower Austrian-based professional who trains with Wolfgang Thiem in Alt Erlaa admits he was very nervous in qualifying matches. “Especially in the last game against Sebastian Ofner. It wasn’t a brilliant game for either of us,” Rodionov said sincerely. “In the end I was the one who handled the pressure a little better.”
Rodionov sees life in the “bubble” as relaxed. “I’m not a gamer who tours every free minute,” says the son of Belarusian parents, who has been officially an Austrian citizen since 2015. “I also like to sit in the hotel. Or watch games on the system.
