In view of the new après-ski rules, many Germans will be able to do without the winter ballerina next season anyway. The happy party during or after skiing will only be possible this year sitting down. After all: alcohol is still allowed.
When it comes to accommodation, ski schools and cable cars, special rules also apply to avoid a second “Ischgl”. “The pleasure of skiing, yes, but without après-ski,” said Federal Chancellor Sebastian Kurz.
The German travel industry “threatened in its existence”
While Austria has yet to react to Spahn’s remarks, they could also have an economic undertone. The call for “home country holidays”, also popularly made by the Austrian side in early summer, is also supposed to give a boost to the travel industry in Germany, which is in dire straits.
The location of the branch “threatens the existence”, the president of the German travel association, Norbert Fiebig, told the newspapers of the Funke media group. Currently, sales are only a quarter of those of the previous year and “no improvement is in sight.” Fiebig referred to a survey carried out by his association, according to which the majority of companies see their own existence “seriously threatened”. Travel agencies and tour operators were the first to be affected by the crown blockade, “and they will be the last to emerge from the crisis in the end.”
The director of the association criticized the fact that the German government wrongly declared several regions as risk zones. In Spain, for example, there are numerous islands such as Lanzarote, Formentera and Menorca, in which there is not a single access point to the crown, but they are still classified as risk areas. “That is absurd,” criticized Fiebig.
