A San Francisco court forced the United States government to justify in writing the ban on the short video platform TikTok before Friday. Otherwise, the White House will have to postpone it.

TikTok had taken action against the US government’s order to ban the company’s application from Apple and Google offerings, thus preventing it from being downloaded in the US The platform, which belongs to the Chinese company Bytedance, presented the corresponding request this Wednesday. Judge Carl Nichols later said the United States government had to respond Friday afternoon.

US President Donald Trump had ruled in mid-August that TikTok owner Bytedance had 90 days to sell the company. Otherwise, the service, which is especially popular with young people, will be banned.

Trump had described the app as a security risk because Chinese authorities could use the app to access data of US citizens. With two orders he laid the groundwork for the end of the application in the US TikTok and Bytedance argued to no avail that the data of American users was stored in the US and not going to China.

Trump: TikTok’s decision “is solely a matter of security”

American software company Oracle and retailer Walmart are currently negotiating an acquisition of TikTok. If there was a deal, the end of TikTok could be avoided. Trump said the decision to accept the deal was “solely a matter of security.”

The US Department of Commerce postponed the ban on TikTok, which was actually scheduled for Sunday. It should now go into effect on Saturday.
