Two killed in train accident in Eisenstadt

The last time there was an accident at the Eisbachstrasse level crossing, which was equipped with traffic lights, was at the end of June, in which fortunately there were no injuries.

“How long do you want to see the ÖBB here? This level crossing is life threatening. The ÖBB must finally ensure more road safety and urgently deactivate this level crossing. There must be no more accidents here,” Steiner said in a broadcast.

The city chief also called on the state of Burgenland to act. After the June incident, the state and ÖBB exchanged responsibilities. Regional Councilor Heinrich Dorner (SPÖ) then announced an immediate road safety inspection of the site. “It is too late for the victims of this accident,” said the mayor.

“I call on the ÖBB and the state to erect a barrier system at this intersection to ensure the safety of road users,” Steiner appealed. The Free City of Eisenstadt had already committed to securing level crossings in recent years and in 2018 provided a barrier system at Spange Süd.

The costs were borne entirely by the city. “It cannot be that the ÖBB removes its responsibility every time. That is why I hope that the ÖBB will act quickly and bear the costs of the barrier system,” emphasized the mayor.
