At first glance, everything looks rosy.
At Maccabi Tel Aviv, RB Salzburg was able to win 2-1, play the second leg in a week in Salzburg with two away goals and can already imagine having just one match in the Champions League group stage.
The result fits, but the overall performance was not great, as some players self-critical admit after the match in Israel.
“It worked less well than bad,” admitted Dominik Szoboszlai openly and honestly. The Hungarian started the return with his converted penalty to make it 1-1 after a foul on Patson Daka in the penalty area. Until then, Salzburg had a hard time creating clear chances and also acted incorrectly.
The double after the break, with Masaya Okugawa adding the winning goal a little later, was ultimately decisive for the game. “The important thing is that we win 2-1. We can all play better, including ourselves as a team.”
Szoboszlai: “You just can’t breathe”
On the other hand, it was not exactly an easy situation in which the police of the beach metropolis had to confront their husbands. The Corona-related situation at “Lockdown” Israel was not just a mental challenge, it was difficult to focus on the essentials due to UEFA’s incomprehensible decision to play the game anyway.
Furthermore, until shortly before kick-off, nobody knew how Maccabi would play. A total of nine players tested positive, plus some supervisors. Salzburg were protected, not allowed to leave the hotel and still had to adjust to the million dollar game in the risk zone.
As if that wasn’t enough, the players also struggled with muggy temperatures in Tel Aviv, which Szoboszlai found “perhaps an advantage” for the opponent he’s used to. “The weather was strange because not only was it hot, but you just couldn’t breathe.”
Stankovic: “That will definitely be an advantage”
Goalkeeper Cican Stankovic also had trouble breathing properly and was still gasping for air a few minutes after the final whistle. Relief from the result allowed the ÖFB goalkeeper to look forward to CL’s second consecutive appearance.
“The only thing that counts is that we don’t lose the game at home. We are very strong at home, we know our stadium and the temperatures feel 20 degrees lower, that will definitely be an advantage.
