Tesla wants to bring significantly cheaper electric cars to the market in a few years. To do this, the American company wants to significantly reduce the cost of batteries, as Tesla announced on Tuesday. According to the information, Tesla could have a car for sale for $ 25,000 in about three years. That would be $ 10,000 less than what is currently the cheapest Tesla model.
“It is absolutely crucial that we make cars that people can afford,” said Elon Musk, Tesla’s chief executive. He justified it with climate change, against which “we have to act.”
At the Tesla presentation, which was streamed on the Internet, a number of new battery features were explained, including the design of the cells, the use of silicone and the production line. The changes are intended to reduce production costs per kilowatt hour by 56 percent.
Musk had fueled the tension in the run-up to the presentation by announcing “crazy” developments on the Internet service Twitter. Until now, Tesla has manufactured its batteries in factories in the US and China. A new giant factory is currently being built near Berlin in Germany.
Since its own production is insufficient, Tesla must also have batteries made by Panasonic. Still, Tesla could face a battery shortage in 2022, according to Musk, even if suppliers dramatically increase production. Therefore, the company must now “act for itself”.
