Less than two weeks after the Moria refugee camp was destroyed by several fires, a fire broke out at a reception center for refugees on the Greek island of Samos. The flames are now under control, police and firefighters announced Sunday. Consequently, two or three residential containers were destroyed, there were no injuries.
12,700 homeless
Eleven days ago, the Moria refugee camp was destroyed by several fires. According to the authorities, this left 12,700 people homeless. As a result, around 9,000 of them were housed in a makeshift tent town on Lesbos over the weekend.
Like the Moria camp, the Samos facility was built during the 2015 refugee crisis. This camp is also completely overcrowded. Instead of the 650 expected, almost 6,000 migrants live there. Therefore, hygienic conditions are precarious and there are always violent conflicts and fires in the Samos camp.
The tensions are further fueled by the fact that, unlike the rest of the country, refugee camps in Greece are still subject to a curfew due to the corona pandemic. According to official taxes, so far 21 infections with the new corona virus have been detected in refugees in Samos.
