In the Vienna elections on October 11, strict Corona security measures are applied at polling stations. Eligible voters must wear a face mask and are asked to bring your own pen to mark with a cross.
The city of Vienna has set the guidelines for the election day of October 11, which is dominated by the coronavirus pandemic. Extensive security measures are envisaged in polling stations, such as the obligation to wear oral and nasal protection. However, this should be briefly removed during voting. There is an offer for deployed personnel to be tested.
Crown Guidelines for Arranged Vienna Elections
Elections for local and district councils will take place in the federal capital on October 11. On this day, 1,494 polling stations will be available between 7 am and 5 pm The Vienna Elections Service (Magistratsabteilung 62) has produced complete specifications that are available to the APA. The measures must guarantee a safe choice.
A new division has already been implemented: In critical facilities like nursing homes, only the people who live there can vote. Eligible out-of-town voters have already been assigned to other districts. Polling stations with rooms less than 40 square meters have also moved to larger rooms.
Increased interest expected in voting cards
At the same time, the staff for the issuance of voting cards was increased in order to be prepared for the greater interest in this form of voting. Compared to the 2019 National Council election, according to MA 62, a total of 163 more people are working in the electoral units.
For the same election day, experts in the field of hygiene and microbiology and a mathematical model simulation worked on the protection measures. These are also coordinated with the medical crisis team, as they say.
Mask requirement and distance rule at the voting station
It is mandatory to bring a mask that you have brought with you and keep the distance of one meter. Election staff also wear a mask. Visitors are asked to bring their own pen to mark them. If this is forgotten, sanitized pens are available at the voting station. This time, however, there is no such thing in the voting booth itself.
The posters and binders refer to the requirements, with one relevant exception for the mask requirement. In order to verify the identity of persons entitled to vote, the protection must be briefly withdrawn. To prevent this from leading to infection, Plexiglass “identification screens” are used, behind which the person must position themselves.

According to the electoral authority, special attention is also paid to hygiene. In addition to basic disinfection of electoral furniture such as voting booths, ballot boxes and tables, all contact points that eligible voters come in contact with are periodically disinfected on Election Day. Cleaning staff will be increased for this. Election staff were also instructed to ventilate the voting station at least hourly for at least three minutes prior to the start of the election and for the remainder of the day, unless the location was mechanically ventilated.
The city also offers voluntary testing as part of a screening program run by the state medical directorate for everyone involved in the election and counting, that is, city employees or assessors. In total, about 12,000 people will be invited to participate and will be gargled before and after the elections.
Flying Electoral Authorities Also For Corona Infected People And Suspicious Cases
Eligible voters who are unable to visit a polling station may be visited by specially equipped flying electoral authorities. This also applies to people who are infected or who have been classified as suspected cases. In these special cases, the protective equipment is reinforced by putting on FFP2 masks without an exhalation valve, face shields, gowns and disposable gloves. There are also paramedics.
