On Sunday in front of some 3,000 spectators at the Generali Arena, the Violets defeated SV Ried 2: 1 (1: 0). The two goalscorer was Christoph Monschein, who recently joined the FB team, who bagged two penalties.
The Rieders proved to be strong and played with a lot of will, but very little happened on offense. The goal was symptomatic in the 89th minute via an own goal by Austria’s substitute defender Maudo Jarjue.
Austria manager Peter Stger made four changes to the starting lineup in the 0: 1 game against LASK. This is how Austrian returnees Markus Suttner and Georg Teigl began: one played from the left behind and the other in the first half from the right in front. In midfield, captain Alexander Grnwald took up position, with central defender Erik Palmer-Brown, who was in shape again. For his part, former Austria manager Gerald Baumgartner relied on the same team from Ried as he did a week ago in the last-minute win against WSG Tirol.
The initial phase in Vienna-Favoriten had little to offer football gourmets. Both teams were tactically disciplined and cautious. Austria ventured out of the comfort zone more often, but got bogged down with their attempts over and over again.
It was until the 31st minute before Suttner crossed a dangerous cross in front of goal from the left, but where Teigl failed to score a dangerous header. A few minutes later, referee Rene Eisner immediately pointed to the penalty spot after Manuel Kerhe’s hard pass against the conspicuous Patrick Wimmer. Monschein casually turned with a chip in the middle of the goal.
With the advantage behind, the Austrian game relaxed. Monschein (40th) followed immediately with a volley over the goal. After the break, Ried also had the first chance with a header from Constantin Reiner (52nd). The second penalty, after Michael Lercher hit Monschein on the foot, put the guests back on the line. After the late connection, Baumgartner’s troops mobilized their entire force again, but it was not enough for more.
