Federal Chancellor Sebastián Kurz confirmed in an interview that there are differences of opinion within the government about the Corona strategy.
“It is true that I wanted to tighten the measures from the end of the summer. But it is not my only decision. Now in the government we have jointly agreed on a tightening, which is also very necessary,” explains Foreign Minister Sebastián Kurz in an interview with “Austria.”
With the statement, the head of the ÖVP openly admits that the coalition does not always agree on the tightening of anti-crown measures and that there are differences of opinion. Despite the differences, the stricter crown rules will take effect from midnight on Monday to stop the rapid spread of the virus in the country.
“I hope the situation in Vienna does not get out of control”
In the interview, Kurz justifies his strict approach, for example, on late night dinners. “Now we must all fight together against this high number of infections. That is why the Minister of the Interior, Nehammer, will now also launch a vigorous action and carefully monitor the night gastronomy,” said the foreign minister. For example, some operators used derivations. “That should no longer be allowed.”
In the interview, Chancellor Kurz also harshly criticized the lack of implementation of the measures. “I have the impression that some have underestimated the situation and did not implement the measures that would have been necessary in time. I hope that the situation in Vienna does not get out of control,” Kurz said.
The 34-year-old ÖVP boss is also sure that autumn and winter “will continue to be very tough.” Due to the great advances made in the field of medicines, tests and vaccines, Kurz hopes “that the situation can return to normal in the summer of 2021.”
