In coordination with the federal states, the Ministry of Transport wants to put together a package of measures against extreme lawns. Among other things, it is expected to increase the penalty range from 2,180 to 5,000 euros and double the duration of the withdrawal of the driving license. Furthermore, in extreme cases, it should also be possible to impound the car. For example, if you exceed the speed limit in dangerous conditions, repeatedly mowing, driving after withdrawing your driver’s license due to unlicensed grass or grass. That is currently being examined, “following the example of Switzerland,” Gewessler said.
“Stronger penalties, up to the confiscation of the car, will help us contain the danger and save lives,” said Transport Minister Leonore Gewessler (Greens). The implementation is planned “as soon as possible,” the ministry said, without specifying a precise time horizon. Higher penalties should have been the subject of the state traffic officers’ conference held in Vienna on Friday. This was canceled due to the crown and should now be done via video conference.
50 deaths in the first half of the year due to speeding
50 people died in Austria from speeding in the first half of the year. The previous year, around 7,200 people were deprived of their driving license for speeding over 40 km / h in the local area or more than 50 km / h outdoors as the main offense. According to traffic accident statistics, improper speed is one of the top three causes of fatal accidents. “Nobody understands when human lives are in danger from neglect, such as through extreme lawns,” Gewessler emphasized. “In the case of extreme speed infractions and in the case of recidivism, more severe penalties are required,” the minister demanded.
Driver’s license should be easier to remove
In detail, the limit values for the withdrawal of the driving license will now be lowered by ten km / h each, which means that they should be 30 km / h in urban areas and 40 km / h in urban areas with two week withdrawal periods. If the speed limit is exceeded by more than 40 km / h in the local area and more than 50 km / h in the open air, the minimum period of withdrawal of the driving license should be doubled from two to four weeks.
Grass will also be introduced as a reserved offense: for speeds greater than ten km / h below the respective threshold for the withdrawal of the driving license. Repeated speeding violations should be considered within four rather than the previous two years and the minimum withdrawal period should be increased from six weeks to two months.
A new criminal offense is planned “illegal racing”
Another proposal is a new criminal offense “illegal racing” based on the German model, where it operates under prohibited racing of motorized vehicles and is punished with a fine or prison.
