In old age, cardiovascular diseases are a main cause, in middle age cancer, in youth not only cancer but also suicides and accidents. There was no increase for respiratory diseases “before the Crown.” Respiratory illnesses, injuries, and poisonings were also major causes of death.
No increase due to Corona
The development of deaths from respiratory diseases before the Corona crisis could show whether SARS-CoV-2 was already widespread in Austria by March / April 2020. “Before Corona”, however, there was no increase in the evidence, according to Statistics Austria. Comparison with the average for the years 2015 to 2019 shows only a slight advantage for the months prior to the appearance of the first confirmed cases of Covid-19. “Deaths in 2020 are almost entirely in line with the average of previous years. In 2018 and 2019, slightly more deaths were recorded from the beginning of February to the end of March than in the comparable period of 2020,” the experts reported. In the winter of 2017, however, there were an exceptionally high number of deaths from respiratory diseases. This indicates a strong flu season.
