After several federal states have already demanded higher fines for those who drive for speeding, now they will also be implemented. In coordination with the federal states, the Ministry of Transport wants a Package of measures against extreme lawns cord. Among other things, an increase in the range of punishment vfrom 2180 to 5000 Euro as well as Duplication of the period of withdrawal of the driving license.

“Stronger sanctions, including the confiscation of the car, will help us contain the danger and save lives,” said the transport minister. Leonore Gewessler (Green). The implementation is planned “as soon as possible,” the ministry said, without specifying a precise time horizon.

Higher penalties should have been the subject of the state traffic officers’ conference held in Vienna on Friday. However, this was canceled due to the crown and must now be done via video conference.

Driver’s license withdrawn from 7,200 people due to frenzy

50 people died in Austria in the first half of the year due to excessive speed of road traffic. The previous year, around 7,200 people were deprived of their driving license for speeding over 40 km / h in the local area or more than 50 km / h outdoors as the main offense.

According to traffic accident statistics, improper speed is one of the top three causes of fatal accidents. “Nobody understands when human lives are in danger from neglect, such as through extreme lawns,” Gewessler emphasized. “In the case of extreme speed infractions and in the case of recidivism, more severe penalties are required,” the minister demanded.

In detail, the limit values for the withdrawal of the driving license will now be lowered by ten km / h each, which means that they should be 30 km / h in urban areas and 40 km / h in urban areas with two week withdrawal periods. If the speed limit is exceeded by more than 40 km / h in the local area and more than 50 km / h in the open air, the minimum period of withdrawal of the driving license should be doubled from two to four weeks.

Turf as a reserved offense

Grass will also be introduced as a reserved offense: for speeds greater than ten km / h below the respective threshold for the withdrawal of the driving license. Repeated speeding violations should be considered within four rather than the previous two years and the minimum withdrawal period should be increased from six weeks to two months.

In particularly dangerous cases, it is also foreseen that the vehicles are impounded. This includes, for example, speeding in dangerous conditions, repeated grass, driving after having your driver’s license taken away due to grass or grass without a driver’s license. That is currently being examined, “following the example of Switzerland,” Gewessler said. Another proposal is a new criminal offense “illegal racing” based on the example of Germany, where it runs under “motor vehicle racing prohibited” and is punishable by a fine or prison.
