An electric scooter is likely to have started a fire in an apartment in the city center of Wels late Wednesday night, the affected apartment on the fourth floor of the residential and commercial building almost completely burned down.
“So they alerted us to a fire in an apartment in the center of the city. When the emergency services arrived, we already saw that the image of the flame emerged from the balcony, that is, it had already passed to the next floor. The information also said that there were people in danger. We sent the first platoon to rescue the people and started fighting the fire with the second platoon that was present. Thank goodness people were not in danger. The whole apartment is really burned. We have to suspect the cause of the fire at this point, but it seems very strong – there was an e-scooter inside – and the ladies and gentlemen of the burning apartment told us it was closed. The fire started and it was as fast as possible and they could only flee the area. After an intense firefight, we were able to first extinguish the surrounding fire, then we were able to take the e-scooter outside and then put it in a trash can to cool it down, “says Markus Marehard, Chief of Operations for the Wels Fire Department.
The exact cause of the fire is currently being investigated by police officers.
No one was injured. The largest contingent of the rescue service, including the emergency doctor, was able to return once the extinguishing measures were completed.
Although there were a large number of passersby at the scene, the firefighters valued the behavior positively because the large number of people did not interrupt the operation.
Wienerstrasse and Eisenhowerstrasse were closed to traffic for about an hour in the area of the deployment site.
