MAN’s board of directors has planned the “complete closure of the plant in Steyr by the end of 2023,” the head of the workers council, Erich Schwarz, confirmed to the staff on Wednesday. According to management, much of the Steyr plant will be relocated to Poland and Turkey.
According to Schwarz, the MAN Group intends to terminate Steyr’s workplace safety and location contracts, which will be valid until 2030, through a profitability clause in the contract. Next week, the German truck and bus manufacturer in Munich will begin consultations by the central works council on a counter-strategy before the package of measures is negotiated with management.
Factory closure through mega savings program
The planned closure of the Steyr plant is part of a mega-savings program that plans to eliminate a total of 9,500 jobs. Based on the detailed plans now available to Schwarz, nearly 50 truck service branches are also planned to close around the world. This would mean that in addition to the 9,500 employees, 1,300 more would lose their jobs.
Steyr order situation stable despite CoV crisis
Above all, Schwarz wants to be the first to get a “true cost of individual locations” from the board of directors for the supervisory board meeting. The order status at Steyr has not changed. Despite Corona, they have the same order book this year with nearly 20,000 units per year, he said. In addition, € 60 million has recently been invested in a new paint shop, the largest paint shop in Europe for plastic truck parts.
Truck production at Steyr since 1919
The development and production of commercial vehicles at Steyr has a tradition that dates back more than 100 years. The Steyr plant was completed in 1914, truck production started in 1919, and in 1999 Upper Austria took over the entire production of MAN light and medium series trucks. These are vehicles with two or three axles, also equipped with all-wheel drive, with 150 to 340 hp and a total weight between 7.5 and 26 tons. In addition, Steyr also builds special vehicles and components for the Group’s production network, such as driver’s cabs. Research and development is also taking place at this location. Recently there was also a small series of electronic trucks.
