Rapid’s attempt to participate in the soccer Champions League for the third time has failed. The Viennese had to admit defeat to KAA Gent 1: 2 (0: 1) in the third qualifying round on Tuesday. After the end in the penultimate round before “queen class”, Rapid is still the ticket to the Europa League group stage as a consolation.
Niklas Dorsch (36th) and Roman Yaremtschuk (59th) shot the Belgians, who were ill in the league, 2-0 up. The goal of “Joker” Yusuf Demir (93rd) came too late. The record champions of Austria weren’t necessarily the worst team at the Ghelamco Arena in Ghent when the spectators were excluded, but they didn’t get enough maximum chances. Two oversights sealed the knockout
Gent pocketed five million euros for the victory, which has a duel with Dynamo Kiev. Hütteldorfer will receive an entry fee of three million euros for the Europa League (draw on October 2), where they will be in the main round for the eighth time. Then the increase was achieved twice (2015/16, 2018/19).
Ambitious start
Rapid coach Dietmar Kühbauer built on the starting eleven in a 1-0 second-round win at Lok Zagreb. Compared to the first 4-1 win in the league against Admira, Kelvin Arase fell in again and sneaked into the lineup in Demir’s place. For Ghent, who broke up with short-term manager Laszlo Bölöni following criticism from the ranks on the eve of the match, assistant manager Wim de Decker (38), who arrived in the summer, stayed on the sidelines. Ukrainian star forward Yaremchuk, who had fallen out of favor as a revolutionary leader in Bölöni, was able to break in from the start.
Rapid started out ambitious and had delivered three good offensive scenes after six minutes. In the 17th minute, Grün-Weiß smelled 1-0, Thomas Murg took aim after a 40-meter dash and hooked just after the gate (17). The Belgian runner-up last year had already controlled the lively game with a physical presence. And he took his first big opportunity to take the lead: the incoming cod was criminally left alone on one flank measured from the right side and headed in the six-yard area (36).
The game went into overtime
Quickly he moved up. That was nearly avenged after he fumbled in the 45th minute: Yaremchuk put the ball too far ahead at the crucial moment after a solo down the middle of the field. Rapid goalkeeper Richard Strebinger came out on time. In return, Taxiarchis Fountas forced goalkeeper Davy Roef to make the first real save with a long shot.
After the break, Rapid forward Ercan Kara reported: An attempt from an acute angle (51º) and another from a central position (53º) went over the crossbar. A little later Leo Greiml put his rival Giorgi Chakvetadze a leg in the penalty area with a clumsy action. Strebinger, who dived into the corner, had his leg in Yaremchuk’s penalty from a center kick, but was no longer decisive (59th).
Kühbauer responded with a system change and brought Demir for the weak Arase. Quick attacks increased, but Gent handled the lead correctly. Until minute 93, when Demir went from 18 meters to 1: 2. The rescue in the extension was possible: Greiml forgave the possible 2: 2 by head (95º). Rapid has to wait for CL’s third participation after 1996/97 and 2005/06. (apa)
