After the corona outbreak in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, only three new infections were recorded over the weekend. 740 people were tested on Saturday and Sunday, district administrator Anton Speer said. Some 300 results from Monday are still pending. Currently there are no further restrictions on public life.
In total, including the three new cases, 59 people have tested positive so far, the seven-day incidence is 55 and thus above the 50 cases per 100,000 mark.
The three new cases are two people from the United States and one person from Germany. Two people were guests of the Irish pub, one works at the Peaches cocktail bar.
The crown bud is said to be due to a possible “super spreader”. According to initial findings, a 26-year-old American woman moved through the Garmisch pubs on September 8, despite symptoms of illness and quarantine. She hadn’t expected the result of the corona test. That was positive.
The woman is a civilian employee of the US armed forces in the Upper Bavarian market town and lives on its premises, a spokesperson for the US armed forces had previously announced. German and Bavarian law apply to them. The woman faces not only a fine for violating quarantine requirements, but also criminal prosecution for negligent bodily injury.
25 infected hotel employees
The 26-year-old works at a hotel for American soldiers and their families. The property was closed for two weeks after several workers tested positive. According to the district administrator, 25 hotel employees have been infected. The tests have not yet been completed, said district administrator Speer.
It is not yet clear whether the woman was actually the cause of the outbreak. According to Speer, she was with friends. In general, it could not be ruled out that other infected people were also outside the bars, that was part of the investigation. Speer also said about the woman who was quarantined after her crown test. “She knowingly failed to comply with the quarantine measures.” One day after going to the pub, the woman received her positive result.
“It’s about our tourism, it’s about our people”
“It was important that we act very quickly,” said District Administrator Speer on how to deal with the outbreak. Finding contacts is difficult because guests sometimes entered wrong names and phone numbers in bar contact lists. However, he praised the “youngsters” for their willingness to be tested in many ways. The district had specifically asked them to conduct tests.
Speer described the few new infections as “partial success.” But one should not be careless now. “It’s about our tourism, it’s about our people, protection is the most important thing.” He thanked the restorers for their understanding.
Garmisch-Partenkirchen is a popular place for tourists. Addressing them, Speer said: “Tourists can come to the district without any problem, but of course they have to comply with the regulations and exit restrictions.” He referred to the closure of the hotel business after 10 pm. Additionally, currently only groups of up to five people are allowed at the location, restrictions also apply to private parties.
Note: An earlier version of the text stated that 714 people were tested over the weekend. In fact, there are 740.
