Ukrainian President Zelenskyi asked Chancellor Kurz to name the square in front of Barbarakirche “Ukraineplatz.” The city of Vienna refers to the guidelines for naming traffic areas.
At the request of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Selenskyj, the city of Vienna wants to take the place in front of the Barbarakirche on Postgasse “Ukraineplatz“To name, not for a for or against. Rather, on Tuesday in the office of the Councilor responsible for Culture, Veronica Kaup-Hasler (SPÖ), reference is made to the corresponding guidelines for the procedure.
“Requests to name traffic areas are submitted to us regularly on liability grounds, so there is a guidelines-based approach,” the city said.
Zelenskyi is currently on his first official visit to Vienna. On Tuesday, she made the official request for the name of the square in front of the Barbarakirche to Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP). The Federal Chancellery said that the request was positive, but that the decision was in the hands of the city of Vienna. The background to the suggestion is the role of St. Barbara as the oldest and most important center of Ukrainianism in Austria.
The procedure takes time
However, it is not easy or fast. Vienna has a special procedure for naming a square or a street. First, in the district, in this case the city center, the application must be voted on in the district parliament. If the decision is positive, the request goes to the subcommittee to name traffic areas. It meets several times a year for deliberations. The final decision is finally made by the culture committee.
“Once a positive district decision has been made, a technical and historical review is required, on the basis of which the city of Vienna can act and make decisions,” concluded the city councilor’s office.
