Dominic Thiem was smiling all over his face when he returned to Vienna.
Tired but overjoyed, he returned to Austria after winning the US Open to answer media questions at a press conference before the 27-year-old was allowed to recover from the stress of recent weeks.
The tension has long since subsided, he answered the questions with ease and with great humor. Among other things, on whether Mama Karin Thiem now has to give herself a new tattoo. As the newly crowned Grand Slam winner revealed in the past, she has a proper tattoo for each tournament win.
With this special triumph, Thiem is only the second Austrian Grand Slam winner since Thomas Muster at the 1995 French Open, there is no exception. At least if Dominic has his way.
In the direction of his mother, he asked the rhetorical question: “Statue of Liberty, right? That has to be it.” If Thiem continues like this, some more tattoos will follow.
