The 29-year-old from the Amstetten district of Lower Austria did not appear at a meeting point with his mountain companion. Then the man alerted rescuers. A search by mountain rescue, alpine police and an ÖAMTC helicopter was unsuccessful on Sunday night, but continued on Monday morning. As reported by the mountain rescue, the 29-year-old was found dead Monday morning.
The 29-year-old and a 47-year-old, both from the Amstetten district, set out on a mountain hike to the Haller ramparts on Sunday morning. They began the ascent from the Buchauer Sattel with the common goal of climbing the Hexenturm (2,172 meters). Due to different walking speeds, they parted ways around 10 am at Admonter Haus (1,723 meters).
The 47-year-old returned to the Admonter’s house as arranged, but did not find his mountain companion there. Then he headed to the starting point of the joint tour, the Buchauer Sattel (861 meters) on the B117. After the 29-year-old didn’t show up there either, the older one notified the state warning center around 5 p.m.
This sparked a large-scale search. More than 100 emergency services searched for the man, with the support of the Alpine police, two helicopters and several fire departments.
Late on Monday morning, the Upper Austrian police helicopter crew was able to find the missing Lower Austrian dead at the upper end of the Bärenkar at an altitude of about 2,000 meters. The AEG Liezen Alpine Police eventually recovered the man with the help of the Styrian Flight Police. According to previous research, the 29-year-old, described as very experienced and well-trained, may have crashed around 150 meters into the steepest and rockiest terrain on the descent from the Hexenturm to the Bärenscharte (climbing points in the third to fourth degree of difficulty). The exact cause of the accident is the subject of ongoing investigations by the Alpine Police (Alpine Einsatzgruppe Liezen). Family members who have already been notified of the accident are cared for by the crisis intervention team.
