His long-time coach, Günter Bresnik, made a not inconsiderable contribution to Dominic Thiem’s first Grand Slam title.
The 59-year-old was Thiem’s long-term coach until about a year and a half ago and his manager until May 2019. In these roles, Bresnik was succeeded by Chileans Nicolas Massu and Herwig Straka. In the morning newspaper Ö1, Bresnik comments on Monday.
He had hoped for a clear course in favor of his ex-protégé before the five-set final against German Alexander Zverev: “I would have said that Dominic, as a clear favorite and best player, would do it much faster. So in the end it was crucial how Dominic faced a 2-0 deficit on set, which nobody expected. And that was again very impressive to me. These are these extraordinary qualities that Dominic has just had since he was a teenager. “
Thiem is the best in the overall package
The night after the ball was used, other experts confirmed this exception by telephone. “For me it was a mental masterpiece.” The world number three on the US Open field was probably the best mentally and, more importantly, physically and in the game.
“Probably (Novak, note) Djokovic is the only one who can hold a candle for him right now. He played himself (second round disqualification, note).”

Thiem, for his part, dealt with the general conditions in the New York “bubble” and without spectators simply better than the others. “The performance was worthy of a champion,” said Bresnik.
Thiem and Zverev are the two players who have been on the radar for years to succeed Djokovic, (Roger) Federer and (Rafael) Nadal. “The two (Thiem and Zverev), at least in terms of tension, delivered an impressive game.”
Thiem is simply the best in the overall package. Bresnik: “I’ve been saying it for years. He’s finally confirmed it. And I hope it’s finally a corresponding boost for the future, because he won’t be satisfied with a Grand Slam title.”
In just under two weeks at the French Open in Paris, not only Djokovic but also Nadal of the top four in the world rankings will compete alongside Thiem. The injured Federer fits again.
The lack of the “greats” is irrelevant to Bresnik
The fact that none of the “Big Three” were there in the final stages of the specialization at Flushing Meadows does not detract from Thiem’s success for Bresnik. “Dominic already beat all four players, the big four, including (Andy) Murray, in their prime. He played a sensational final against Djokovic at the Australian Open this year, and from my point of view better there. The players lost. It may have been the best performance than yesterday. “
So the 27-year-old’s Grand Slam debut win is perfectly fine for Bresnik.
“And this mess with these three superstars, whom he has already beaten, as I said, even on different surfaces, is sure to get on the youngsters’ nerves,” concludes Bresnik in his interview with ORF. “And I think this generation’s conflict has been resolved and that the replacement will now be done in a short time.”
