In the noble ski resort of Arlberg, Lech, those eligible to vote must vote again in two weeks.
In the decision on the mayor’s chair, there is a second round between incumbent Ludwig Muxel and Stefan Jochum, the municipality’s registrar. In Sunday’s direct elections, Jochum outscored the former head of the Muxel municipality by more than twelve percentage points.
Jochum clearly in front
Muxel, who has been mayor since April 1993, received 369 votes (35.45 percent) in the direct mayoral election, while 496 voters (47.65 percent) voted for Jochum. The third candidate in the direct mayoral election, Bruno Strolz, had to be content with 176 votes (16.91 percent).
In the municipal council election, however, the “Lech List” around Ludwig Muxel with 443 votes (42.19 percent) was almost twelve percentage points ahead of the “Our Village” list around Jochum (319 votes, 30.38 percent). The “Together on the Road” list received 226 votes (21.52 percent), the “Zukunft Wagen” list received 62 votes (5.9 percent). The turnout was 81.09 percent.
Dispute over the community center
In Lech, a dispute over the design of the new community center has arisen for a long time, which is now also reflected in the direct election of city councils and mayors. Criticism of the € 38 million project, which is already underway and should be completed in 2022, never stopped. Critics also include proponents of the lists that opposed Muxel’s “Lech List”. The 65-year-old Muxel’s goal is to be re-elected mayor and resign in about two years, likely after the community center has been completed.
The fact that there is discontent in the village is demonstrated only by the fact that four lists were available for elections on Election Day; In the past, Lech used to decide on his municipal representatives by majority vote, most recently in 2015 and 2010. In this election mode, there is no party list and voters enter the candidates they want on a blank ballot.
