The situation becomes more critical. This sentence does not only apply to refugees on Lesbos, who are barely living in sometimes inhumane conditions; it now also applies to the internal relationship between the Greens and the People’s Party, which continue to take contradictory positions on the question of whether refugee children should be airlifted from the burning camp of Moria to Austria.
After Green Club President Sigrid Maurer described ÖVP’s negative attitude as “unworthy” and “cynical”, party leader Werner Kogler also stayed on Saturday: Austria should take in children. “If even Mr Söder (the prime minister of Bavaria, keep in mind) can do that and now the Dutch prime minister, Mr Rutte, Austria can do it too,” Kogler said at noon on Ö1.
In the vein of his party leader Kurz, Salzburg Governor Wilfried Haslauer (ÖVP) had previously been featured in the morning newspaper Ö1, where he spoke out against admitting refugees from Moria because he “deeply rejects the method of blackmail.” He said with a glance to Informa that the inmates set the camp on fire.
Previously, Chancellor Sebastian Kurz had contacted the public via Facebook and stated that the images of Moria would cause him consternation.
