It’s finished! After 15 years, Dominik Thalhammer celebrated his return and at the same time his debut as LASK coach in the Bundesliga.
“It takes a load off my heart,” Thalhammer says with a relaxed expression in the “Sky” interview. Most recently, the 49-year-old Viennese took part as Admira coach on the home bench on 14 August 2005. A 5-0 bankruptcy at FC Pasching sealed the end of his term.
Now, 5,507 days later, Thalhammer has the best finish for himself in the coaches’ duel with Austrian returnees Peter Stöger.
Thalhammer: “Can you do better?”
(Text continues below video).
From the beginning, the Linzers pressed the gas in front of some 4,000 spectators, but they left many opportunities. “We were good, we had many great occasions,” was the first analysis of the former women’s national coach.
LASK could have closed earlier, as Thalhammer knows. “We can do better, but we are happy we won.” Gernot Trauner also shares the words of his coach.
“We can play better, Austria often gave us the ball in the first half. You could see that we had thought of something in possession and that we had a lot of dangerous opportunities,” Trauner said. “Still, it was a good debut. Winning the first game is always very important.”
Trauner: “Austria? Very good opponent”
The signs of a good start were, if you trust the statistics, which is really no surprise. Of the last ten duels against the Viennese, LASK has now won eight, the points were shared only twice.
“He was a very good opponent, very well organized. Austria has quality up front, they are strong in the sprints, which means it is not easy to defend them,” said the central defender. “As we did not score another goal, the rival naturally has another chance. But in Alex (Schlager, note) we have a goalkeeper who is not in the national team at all and who has kept us at three points here and there.”
It was the Schlager shows and rookie Andreas Gruber’s golden shot that brought the first three points of the season to LASK’s tally. “We are on the right track, but we don’t want to overestimate this win,” Thalhammer said according to the motto “step by step”.
