The aviation industry continues to suffer severely from the corona pandemic. The number of passengers at Vienna airport in the August holiday month fell by 75 percent to 797,716 travelers compared to the same month the previous year, cargo volume fell 32 percent. Accumulated from January to August 2020, the number of passengers decreased by 69 percent to 6.46 million passengers.
Flight movements (take-offs and landings) in Vienna-Schwechat fell by almost 58 percent in August, Austria’s largest airport said on Friday. Airport managers see a “tentative” recovery compared to the previous month. In July, the number of passengers at the Vienna airport dropped by 82 percent to around 576,000 travelers compared to the same month last year.
The publicly traded Flughafen Wien group with Vienna Airport, Malta Airport and Kosice Airport also posted a huge 74 percent drop to 1.065 million passengers in August. At Malta airport, passenger numbers dropped by 69 percent and at Kosice airport there was a passenger drop of 83 percent. (apa / kle)
