The devastating fire in the Moria refugee camp on the Greek island of Lesbos is causing serious dissonance in the Austrian government coalition.
The head of the Green Club, Sigrid Maurer, attacked the ÖVP on Thursday in the “ZiB2” head on because it prevented the refugees from being admitted. Your group is “quite ready to fight” here.

She was “shocked” by the wording and did not consider it worthy of a foreign minister. The fact that Schallenberg and Greece argue that distributing the Moria refugees to other countries will only bring in new asylum seekers, he called it “cynical” and “a convenient excuse not to have to help.”
Pressure on ÖVP should increase
The head of the Green Club suspects that the ÖVP’s Vienna election campaign is the background. For this reason, his party “unfortunately bites the granite”. But the pressure on the ÖVP will increase. There is also a lot going on at the European level, he referred to the decision by the Netherlands to accept refugees from Lesbos, contrary to the initial announcements. Maurer did not say how many people should be admitted. For the moment, the question is not how many, but whether Austria is even willing to help people in need.
